In Memoriam
“It was back during the Clone Wars,” Rex told the group of soldiers he was commanding. They were gathered around the campfire on Endor. “We were supposed to take out a Separatist supply line.”
They were on the planet Lann, in the Dallan mountain range, near the Ron River. Anakin, Ahsoka and Rex were leading a group of clones to destroy a Separatist supply line, while the rest of the 501st fought off a group of battle droids defending the factory.
“They put their factory all the way on the top of a mountain,” Scrapper, one of the clones, was grumbling.
“Yeah, well, it’s not like they want to make our job easy for us, Scrap,” Anakin pointed out.
“Come on, Scrapper,” Scout, another one of the clones, piped in. “Don’t tell me you’re afraid of a little climbing. There’s nothing to it.”
“Easy for you to say,” Scrapper grumbled. “You learned to climb before you could walk.”
“Alright, you two,” Whisper, a third clone, broke in. “This is supposed to be a *stealth* mission.”
Rex nodded in agreement, and signaled for everyone to be silent. They did so, until Lookout, another member of the group, held up his binoculars and signaled to the others that he could see their destination. They all followed him, and soon, the building was within sight. “Right,” Anakin whispered. “We all know the plan? We go in, make absolutely sure the building’s empty, put down the charges, and get out.”
Everyone nodded to show they understood. They approached the building, and found, as expected, that it was guarded by battle droids. The fighting took over an hour, but at last, they took them down. Next, they entered the building, and, after going over it carefully, found it empty. Finally, they laid their charges down and left.
They were on their way out when they heard a clanking sound. Anakin and Ahsoka immediately whirled around, lightsabers drawn. Before they could do anything, however, the droid had fired straight at Rex. Whisper, however, dove on top of him. At the same moment, Lookout fired at the droid, taking him down.
The droid was blasted apart. When the smoke cleared, however, Whisper was dead.
“So, let’s remember,” Rex finished, “to always stay alert.”
Everyone in his unit survived the battle.
