1. I use the Media Categories to browse all the time. I'd say it's the only way I find fic since the filters have been down. There's no way to get directly to a fandom, so I do the >Fandoms >scroll to category >scroll to fandom name thing. I'm almost always looking for a specific fandom, but sometimes I'll browse the Other Media section since lots of stuff ends up there.
2.
-The alphabetization within the categories is a nightmare, to be honest, such as fandoms starting with "The" being listed under "T".
-There's no clear indication under Books & Lit whether a fandom will be listed under title or author or series name. (I personally prefer browsing books by author name, so I'd love if this were standardized. I usually scroll to where the author's name should be on the list and if it isn't there, I assume there's no works for it. Which is bad for me and bad for authors because the fandom might be listed under book title only and then we both miss out :/)
-I'm continually confused as to where youtube based fandoms are to be found. Web Series in general could probably stand to get their own sections that's separate from Other Media along with some consensus on where things like fic about Vlogs would go (RPF or Web Series?) and where Let's Plays would go? (Web Series or Video Games or RPF if it's fic about the Let's Player rather than the Let's Play?)
-The list of top 5 fandoms in each category is very misleading: under Books, Arthurian Mythology... supposedly has 8431 works! Yay! Except not because Merlin (a TV show) accounts for 7785 of those.
- I get confused as to when a metatag is used in browsing and when individual series tags are used: under Video Games, the Resident Evil game series is listed under "B" for Biohazard|Resident Evil (gameverse) which is confusing if you don't know to look under B instead of R, and under R, the metatag is Resident Evil - All Media Types, which takes you to a list of fics that includes stuff NOT based on the games specifically, such as movie verse fics. Although I can see fics tagged with Resident 5, Resident Evil 6 etc none of those games are listed when you browse the Video Games category.
I love browsing. It's by far my preferred method to look through an archive, but I really dislike that I can't trust the category pages to actually show me everything there is. If a fandom isn't readily accessible when browsing, it should be because the fandom isn't represented on the archive. Not because the fandom is there, it's just not being shown to me.
The alphabetization within the categories is a nightmare, to be honest, such as fandoms starting with "The" being listed under "T".
GOD YES. This drives me absolutely up a wall every time I see it. Same for fandoms starting with "A" or "An". Having to scroll through a hundred or more titles that are alphabetized by "the" or "a" frustrates me into giving up more often than not.
