Mallory Daniels is normal. She just turned 14, she loves baseball and ice cream and going with her sister to the drug store down the road, and summer break was almost over when the world decided to end. 2 months into it, and Mallory is miraculously still alive, armed with her father's rifle and the stubbornness of a teenager who just wants to go home.
After a run-in with a young Trauma at a gas station however, she gets unwillingly pulled into the protection of 3 Makers; Ulthane, Atmeas, and Vawula. Mallory is desperate to leave and find her family, but after a few wounds, a couple of scares (and coping with her broken arm), she begins to learn that her survival up to this point hasn't been just a few strokes of luck. Mallory has to come to terms with the fact her staying alive has been successful due to forces outside of her control, and her family may have not been so lucky. None the less, she's willing to stay in the Maker Tree if it means she gets a slim chance of finding them again.
