He’s handsome with a pair of thin wire frames and a square jaw covered by a thick beard, somewhat tussled black hair, and nothing at all like Bollinger – their chemistry professor on the wrong side of seventy.
“Hi there,” the man says, voice lifting to raise over the dull roar of the class, prompting it to quiet. “I’ll be the assistant professor this semester taking over for Bolly, uh…” He obviously peeks down at a paper in front of him. “Professor Bollinger.”
Dick glances over to Rick to share a curious look just as the man turns around to go behind the desk. He then watches the professor start to sketch out a series of vaguely recognizable compounds, arms above his head and shoulders flexing underneath a thin dress shirt, and it takes far too long for Dick to realize the new professor has also been talking.

He lays on top of the covers, with the cold biting his toes, and just stares at the ceiling. Some nights, like tonight, he imagines the ceiling tearing apart, letting him see the starry night. He imagines himself floating up like a feather, flying through the sky, touching the clouds, and then the stars, and then lighting up in flames from being too close to the sun.
But he is in bed, he’s earthbound, he’s not light enough to fly. The shadow keeps reminding him of this fact; not like he ever forgets. And, instead of floating, he imagines being friends with the shadow version of him. It doesn’t seem like a very good friend, it’s mean.
He tosses and turns, and closes his eyes hoping he didn’t have to see those weird shapes under his eyelids.)

Although they never as much utter a word about the beings, it is the most notable myth in town.

Grace thinks it's just coincidence or proximity when Rocky asks him to decorate pieces of the new carapace, or when the pieces he holds don't crumble in his atmosphere. Or when the hand that presses against the xenonite paneling during testing looks incredibly, insanely human.
