Summary
When Morgana traps Merlin in a magical prison, Arthur captures her, intent on forcing her to free him...to bring him back. She warns him that if she does release him, the Merlin who emerges may no longer be the Merlin he knows. Despite the warning, Arthur goes through with it, and in doing so, lets loose a dark force on the kingdom...a vengeful, angry, cold, and violent Merlin who wreaks havoc on the land, leaving bodies in his wake. It is up to Arthur, Gwaine, and Percival to find him and bring him home or to somehow stop him before all five kingdoms fall at his hand.
When they finally catch up to him, Arthur must rely on the bond he and Merlin share...a bond that when tested ends up tearing the very fabric of time. They find themselves in modern-day London, in a world where magic does not exist, Merlin is without his powers, and their only hope of getting back to their own time is finding a key hidden somewhere in the ruins of Camelot. “My claim to Camelot’s throne,” Uther threw back, face growing more red as Arthur looked between his parents in utter bewilderment. Merlin didn’t blame him. He had envisioned Uther and Ygraine’s love story to be more… well, less based in war and battles.
Ygraine’s eyes narrowed as she grabbed a goblet of wine and threw it in Uther’s face. A few of the guards shifted, but Uther only raised a hand to pause them, spitting out the wine with furious eyes.
“You,” Ygraine said coldly. “Are unworthy to sit upon a stool, let alone a throne.”
From a few feet away, Balinor scoffed as he sipped from his own goblet. “I kind of like having her as a hostage, Uther. She livens up the place.”

Summary
Hurt by a confrontation with a drunk Arthur, Merlin decides he's had enough and leaves Camelot. As he's leaving, Agravaine follows him, determined to kill him so he'll no longer cause him further issues. So Merlin reveals his magic and kills him instead before taking the man's horse and leaving. He travels for a while, playing music at taverns to earn food and shelter before he ends up helping an injured patrol of Caerleon Knights. Queen Annis takes him in and assigns him to train her physicians before discovering his heritage and naming him a knight and reinstating his father's name.
Along the way, Merlin becomes embroiled in courts and councils, three stubborn and playful princesses, and attends King Arthur's wedding at his Queen's side.
Before long, Merlin is lord of his own township, conducting magic lessons, and locating Morgana to try and bring her to his estate as a peace offering to the court of Camelot.
He really wishes he'd found a cave to hide in instead of joining Queen Annis some days....
