The bigger mystery when it came to their instructors, though, was why the two of them had come to teach at TOPGUN. James knew that anyone who had graduated as Top Gun was welcome to teach anytime, and he knew Maverick and Iceman had only graduated a few years ago. But, again, they were the only two current naval aviators with air-to-air kills. They were living legends, and they could surely have their pick of deployments even if they wanted to stay together. A few of James’s classmates had been bold enough to ask about Iceman’s and Maverick’s reasons during their lectures, but even Maverick had been cagey with his answers that time.

Summary
Maverick never thought he’d actually like the nitty gritty details of working at TOPGUN — the lesson plans, the tests, the endless paperwork — but it grows on him over time. Viper’s even taken to giving Maverick these approving glances when he thinks Maverick’s not looking. He’s got a good thing going here.
A year after that, in walks Iceman Kazansky, cool as can be, and Maverick starts to think that he might have a problem.
