“We call this ♪♫.”
“The color or the rock?” I tease, earning myself a low staccato noise not unlike what a human might sound like when faking a laugh.
And then, from one second to another, he straightens. I sense the shift in the air, and as I rise from my squat, his gaze follows me very, very slowly.
“What?” I ask.
“Say name of this again,” he says, and I tilt my head. He’s never needed me to repeat something before. His hearing is immaculate, and he’s never once forgotten something I’ve told him.
“It’s a rock.”
He doesn’t move. He stares at me with his featureless face until even that feels more unsettling than eye contact.
“Grace,” Rocky says flatly. “You are fucking kidding me, question?”

Summary
Rocky emerges, and his body language alone is enough to get me going. I struggle around my laugh, clamping my hand over my mouth. He waits patiently for me to gather myself.
“Eridians are gay,” he declares. “I escape closet for all of them.”
I fail. I tuck my glasses into the collar of my shirt so I can put my head in my hands, wiping tears as they come.
“Rocky,” I say between giggles, “Rocky, I don’t think—I don’t think you can apply human sexuality to Eridians.”
Something in him shifts, then. He perks to attention from his relaxed state, and though he has no eyes or facial features, I swear I can feel his gaze narrow on me.
“I also read about gay rights,” he says slowly, warily. “Read that gay humans are hated some places. Bad.” He comes closer, looking up at me with all the accusation his flat face can muster. “You hate gay, question?”

Or: Rocky learns about another human custom, and as always, he makes it Grace's problem.

Summary
I'd thought before that I'd trust Rocky with anything, even open heart surgery, and I really, truly did. Given a few hours to read up on a topic Rocky could blow any equivalent human out of the water, and his adaptability, intelligence and dexterity gave me absolute confidence in his ability to do anything he set his mind to. The real difficulty would be on my end: my confusing squishy organs and the time limit we were on, my incompatibility with his atmosphere, and, most concerningly, the fact that the only anesthesia the Hail Mary had was local.
Grace has appendicitis. Rocky has to cut it out.

Summary
Tonight, too, is a repeat. Jacob sometimes wonders if God has already smited him and this is his personal circle of hell—one where he is made to commit sin upon sin, made to succumb to lust and homosexuality until he finds the strength to walk away.
Thus, he whispers not a prayer for protection, but a plea for forgiveness—for the scriptures have ridden the tides of history and translations and adaptations and yet there are only two absolutes: that Eve will always take a bite of the forbidden fruit, and that Jacob Palmer will always fall into Sebastian Wilder's bed.
Or: Jacob Palmer has an extreme case of religious guilt. This does not stop him from sleeping with Sebastian Wilder.
