    Soon, he's got children surrounding him and climbing him like a jungle gym, each more delighted than the last, and they discover if he stands tall with his arms stretched out he can fit four children on each arm, and that's how nearly a dozen military officers end up chasing and playing with Ishvalan children for the better part of an hour.

    "Natan," he repeats desperately, because whether or not Roy wants Ed's soul he has it, "I - my - my love for you is," astounding, overwhelming, I fall asleep in love with you, and wake up in love with you, and I once wanted to kill you. I dreamed about burning you to ashes and I thought that hatred was all encompassing, I thought it was powerful, but my hatred for you has nothing on my love for you; it sings in every drop of my blood, because now everything my heart touches you touch because you are my heart.     Riza sighed. "I don’t think you’ve ever done a flip in your life, sir."

    Her colonel considered this before sighing in defeat.

    "Yeah..." He slumped and looked down at his hands in his lap.

    "I think you can, Colonel," Ed encouraged.

    "Thank you, Fullmetal."

    "I got you, home-slice," the boy raised his fist in solidarity.

    "Fullmetal's leg is spicy," Mustang claimed.

    "Ssssspicy," Edward repeated from his bed with the flourish of a single bruised jazz hand.

    Dust still swirls in plumes around them, and he can still feel the shifting of debris as it settles. He sees his friends in only outlines, but their movements are clearly panicked and he still can’t really think but it scares him. His head hurts. His thoughts are like drifting clouds.
    Edward wished the lightheartedness could have lasted, but it never did. He always found a way to smother it.

    -or-

    Edward will never let somebody get hurt when it could be him instead. Roy Mustang just wants to keep the kid from killing himself before he's even a teenager.

    Gentle, gentle, gentle. They’re handling him so carefully and he craves it just as much as he abhors it. It’s maddening, the way his mind can only feel in opposites and extremes—he wants the softness, he’s starving for the affection, but he’s spent so long hungry that the mere idea of filling the emptiness scares him more than the hunger. But oh, how he wants it. He wants it so dearly, so innocently and childishly, but the person he is today wasn’t born from his mother; it was forged in the burning embers of a house fire. He’s metal and bolts, his childhood a cathedral of tragedies, and when life gets hard he cannot afford to bow—he must get harder to match.

    It’s why he ducks away from anything tender, he’s too ravenous to accept it in moderation. A simple brush of fingertips is all it takes for him to want to beg to be held, tightly enough so that he will not fall apart.

    It takes all the little energy he has left to get out those few slurred words, and out of everything he could have used it to say, he’d mustered up all he had in him just to insult him. Roy’s grinning despite it all because this kid —he’s just remarkable, isn’t he? God, how could anyone expect him not to love him to death? Because he loved him to death. He did. He loved the hell out of that stupid kid. His stupid kid.

    His kid. That’s his kid. That’s my kid. Oh God, my kid.

    He was never ashamed of his tics. However, after considering joining the military with them knowing nothing about his condition, he started to think of ways to hide it. Hell yeah he was badass and of course they would want him in the military either way so they definitely didn’t need to know about it. Right?

    Or: Ed has Tourette's Syndrome and has been harming himself by suppressing his tics. This is literally just him telling them and all fluff. Team Mustang love him so much I can't.

    Anything is possible when magic is involved. When the Miracle was born into the Madrigal family, multiple possibilities spread out before them and entire worlds sprang from them. Countless ways the story could have gone.
    Not every story was a happy one.
    There was a world where the magic corrupted and twisted everyone it touched into something cruel and they tormented the village they ruled over.
    But this isn't the story of that family. No, this is the story of what happens after that family is dethroned and the desperate villagers are given a chance to keep their Encanto while the magic dies with the last Madrigal.
    A choice.
    The Miracle needs the Madrigal family to exist. So a different one could be pulled from another world. From a village that didn't deserve them.
    Can a broken village help piece a shattered family back together?
