“What the fuck are you doing?” Sam asks, squinting in the bright light of the kitchen. He looks over his shoulder, and sees a pan on the stove, a bowl of whisked eggs next to it, and…is that—
“I should ask you the same question!” Dean sputters, and suddenly he’s moving forward, nudging Sam back. He plucks the knife out of Sam’s hand like it’s a s’mores stick and not a deadly weapon. He’s herding Sam, arms out wide, and Sam stumbles away, dazed.
“You shouldn’t be awake yet! What are you doing up this early—don’t look at that!” Dean physically grabs Sam’s head and turns it away from the box of cake mix on the counter. Sam blinks in confusion.

“You…what?” Dean asks, the beer frozen half-way to his mouth.
Sam flushes ice-cold down to his toes, the exact feeling of hearing a gun cock behind you, the exact feeling of catching a glimpse of something dark and large lunging at you head-on.
He stops dead.
“Nothing.” He says, mouth numb, face numb, fingers numb. His own bottle tilts precariously, and Sam jerks, trying to keep it from spilling over his jeans. He lunges to his feet, trying to play it off, but the adrenaline pulsing through his bloodstream makes it impossible.
Or: Sam accidentally confesses his love to Dean after a hard hunt. Dean doesn't reciprocate. Yet.

Summary

Getting to care for Sammy is both calming and comfortable, as familiar to Dean as breathing. More than that, though, Dean can finally give Sammy what he wishes he could have given his little brother as a boy—a stable home. His own room, his own things, all the affection in the world, because Dean doesn’t have to toughen Sammy up and teach him about monsters and how to survive them. Sam knows all about that already, and Sammy never has to find out.

Summary
When Sammy wakes up, Dean is still there in the bed with him, much to his relief.
Sammy spends all morning hovering around his big brother, and Dean lets him. They fall back into their roles easily, everything falling into place naturally. It feels like this is exactly how they are meant to be, despite the new elements introduced to Dean’s care, and maybe it is: Dean, big brother, taking care of Sammy, little brother.
Rationally, Sam knows this is much different from what it was when they were children. Rationally, he knows that really? It’s not that different at all.
