“Sure,” says Grantaire, his voice cracking slightly. His mouth tastes like metal.
Enjolras pops his head around the corner and smiles at him, that private, conspiratorial smile that’s just for Grantaire. His hair is a mess from changing clothes and his eyes are bright, bright blue. “And I don’t think I’d mind being married to you.”
Grantaire takes a breath, blinks several times, and looks down at his knitting.
“R?”

Grantaire thought of the man with the knife who had been aiming for Enjolras’s heart. Halfway across the gathering, Grantaire had felt a helpless horror watching it in slow motion, his heart dropping as Bahorel’s considerably larger form stepped in front of him and took the knife in his stomach instead.
Enjolras would have died. Bahorel was in the hospital.
“And what about your friends' safety? Where does that stand in your little revolution? Do you care about that at all?”
Enjolras stood, and Grantaire felt a familiar awe wash over him. His lip was still bleeding a little. He was lovely every hour of every day, but he was magnificent when he was angry.
“Let’s not talk about caring, Grantaire, it isn’t your area of expertise.”

Summary
The feelings were too big for Enjolras’ tipsy brain to put into words, so he responded by putting his hands under Grantaire’s shirt and tucking his face into Grantaire’s neck. He smelled like dish soap, laundry detergent, and faintly of oil paint. Enjolras opened his mouth and licked at his neck and tasted salt on his skin. Under his hands, Grantaire’s stomach tensed and then relaxed.
Grantaire’s chest was vibrating with sound, and Enjolras registered that he was saying something.
“Enjolras, Enjolras, hey,” Grantaire was repeating.
Enjolras, ever reluctant to take orders, lifted his head.
“Not that I don’t like this,” Grantaire said, sounding deeply put-upon, “but you’re drunk.”
(Enjolras comes home drunk after a night with Courfeyrac and Combeferre, and Grantaire finds out firsthand that Enjolras gets horny when he drinks. He deals with it as best he can.)

It was fine, He was fine. Everything was fine.
Had he slept in the past two days? Maybe not, but it was fine. Had he been wearing his binder for around sixteen hours? Yeah, but he was normally good about it so it was ok to let himself slip every once in a while. Had he consumed anything but coffee in the past 8 hours? No, but it was fine. Enjolras was fine.
Grantaire was away for the weekend at a gallery. Enjolras was incredibly proud of his partner for getting his work displayed, and he would have gone with him, but he had a shit ton of work to get done for the protest with the Amis the following weekend.
And an essay to write for his political science class.
And a midterm project to finish for his history class.
It was fine.

Grantaire knew, from the first time he saw Enjolras, that something about him was going to ruin his life— later, he would learn that not only would Enjolras ruin it, but he would save it, he would stitch it back together, he would— and had— held his hand at the end of their world; that realization came much, much later, and far after the realization that he was in love. When it happened, though, it hit him like a car crashing against the railing of a bridge, like a wave dissolving into foam at the first touch of the coast, but for the longest time, he couldn’t figure it out— all that he knew was that he needed. Then one day, like one of those roadside billboards that has always been there, one of them that you simply have never noticed, he saw it— hidden in plain sight, as natural and evident as the sun rising the day after the winter solstice.

So, the protest wasn’t exactly… It wasn’t great.
Ha, Grantaire’s pretty sure that’s the understatement of the decade. It was fucking chaos, that’s what it was. It was people yelling, scrambling to get off the streets and out of the crowd and away from the water canons, and teargas hanging like fog in the air and gendarmes fucking everywhere, and it was-
It was Enjolras, at Grantaire’s side one moment and the next? Just fucking gone. He’d looked, God knows he’d looked, for a flash of golden hair, of bright red jacket, but… nothing. Nothing.
