    Summary

Eames doesn’t look at Arthur more than he has to during the briefing with Carter. This is usually the time where Eames would trade jabs with Arthur, poke holes into Arthur’s contingency plans, glance cursorily through Arthur’s notes and then be absolutely breathtakingly brilliant. Eames seems to be happy enough to follow Carter’s lead on this job.

Arthur doesn’t touch his face, but his bruised skin tingles with what Arthur is steadfastly not thinking of as shame. It’s part of the job. A black eye and a spilt lip from where Carter’s ring had caught mid-strike is more cosmetic than crippling.

    Summary

"Eames dies on a Thursday in Lithuania, two and a half years after the Fischer Job. For almost nine years, he and Arthur have danced the viper and mongoose together. Here lies the unfolding of grief, the reflections of regret, the joy in mortality, and the inescapable nature of being in love."

I wrote one story because I had an idea of what Arthur and Eames' last conversation would sound like. It grew exponentially. As far as I'm concerned, this story is complete. Maybe more will come, but I honestly doubt it. You'll understand why if you get to the end...

I've been told a lot of things about this series, but mostly that even people who don't like Major Character Death still kind of dig it. Which is great and makes a lot of sense, because I don't like reading MCD either and I wrote it. Maybe you'll like it too?

Arthur is very lucky to have Eames. Lucky enough to want to leave dreamsharing behind and maybe start a life all their own. But with no solid reason to leave (and no solid proof that Eames feels the same way), what's the point?

And then, of course, comes Jack Kingsley.

Can Eames and Arthur find their ways back to each other?

His phone is ringing. His phone rings a lot, unfortunately. And while the rational part of Arthur’s brain knows that the best way to shut the damn thing up is to actually answer… just no.

Eames thinks he knows what to expect when he gets involved with Arthur. He loves being wrong.

"Eames has always believed that, when he finally manages to talk (coerce/bribe/incept) Arthur into becoming his lover, it will be a shallow affair kept to the confines of anonymous hotel rooms...And that’s fine, really. It’s worth it, being Arthur’s dirty little secret, if it gives him the privilege of tearing off those gorgeous suits and sucking bruises into smooth skin."

    Summary

It was supposed to be a simple job. All they had to do was enter Alexander Burgess’s dreams and convince him to go away with his lover Paul and leave behind Fawney Rig for good. Simpler than Inception. Safer than Extraction.

Yet when Hob Gadling and Arthur Freeman get inside the head of their mark, they realize that not everything is as it seems. Alexander Burgess is hiding a much darker secret, one that is deeply hidden within the basement not just at Fawney Rig, but also inside of Alex’s mind. And Paul refuses to tell them what it is.

Or: What happens when Dream is set free after a hundred years and he discovers that humans have created the technology to infiltrate dreams?

There’s a surprised moment of silence on the other end of the line, and then Cobb asks, “Eames? Why do you have Arthur’s phone?”

“Because he’s sleeping,” he says shortly. “What do you want?”

post inception, protective eames blocking dom's access to give arthur time and space to recover
      .
One night of sex and real sleep isn’t enough to erase the stress and tension of those years. Eames isn’t foolish enough to think so, even witnessing how much better Arthur looks after that one night. There are still deep shadows under his eyes, and lines in his forehead that he wants to smooth away with a thumb. He’s still pale and a touch too thin; last night it was all too easy for Eames to lift him up, pressing him up against the wall before carrying him to bed.
      .
Tell me, Cobb. Have you even once in the last two years considered what Arthur gave up, to run around the world saving your arse? Did you even think about the fact that he had something to give up?”

The silence on Cobb’s end of the line speaks for itself. Eames nods, even though Cobb can’t see him. “Arthur is exhausted . He’s been running on adrenaline and fear, and you’ve been putting unreasonable expectations on him for years. You haven’t been listening to his advice, you’ve straight up ignored his warnings, you got yourself and him on Cobol Engineering’s hit list and you wonder why Arthur missed Fischer’s militarization? Aside from the fact that sometimes ridiculously rich people can hide things so well that even Arthur can’t find them, you’ve been making him do everything . On this last job alone, you had him running point and training a green architect and making him feel personally responsible for getting you home to your children. He didn’t want to do this job, but you gave him no choice. If you failed, yes, you would have been arrested once we hit American soil, but did you even once stop to think about what might happen to Arthur? About what Saito was going to do if the job failed? You know what he did to Nash–he handed him over to Cobol. Did you ever think that maybe he might do the same to Arthur?”

There’s another long, stunned silence eventually broken by Cobb stuttering, “I–I… Saito wouldn’t…”

“You don’t know that.” Eames knows that, now. Because he got to know Saito fairly well during the planning phase, and he’s good at reading people. By the end of the job, Saito respected Arthur, partly for his loyalty. But Cobb doesn’t know that, and Eames is certain that he never once spared a thought about anyone’s fate but his own.

It’s not that it’s not dangerous down there, but at least when you're down there, there are rules to keep you safe. Watch your depth. Check your air. Safety stop: five meters, three minutes, just in case. Don’t taunt the wildlife. Stay with your buddy. And above all else, don’t ever hold your fucking breath. If you follow the rules, you live.

On the surface, there are so many more variables. There are so many unforeseen circumstances. Drunk drivers, carbon monoxide leaks, Russian aerospace conglomerates and incompetent coworkers, Arthur standing there on the resort’s dock glaring at you as you climb out of the water.

Eames moves to a tropical island. Arthur is afraid of the ocean.
